DMA Street Node Landscaping Project

We are reaching out to you as a loyal supporter of the Dundee community regarding a much-needed project and exciting opportunity for our business district.

It has been over 10 years since the Dundee Merchants Association (DMA) and Dundee Business Improvement District (DBID) undertook the large scale streetscape renovation. Our neighborhood has experienced countless advantages as a result of the investment and improvement in our infrastructure. Dundee has thriving local businesses, excellent dining options and robustcommunity support. Our attendance at neighborhood events such as Dundee Day and membership in the Dundee Merchants Association is at an all-time high. With the Dundee-Memorial Park Association (DMPA), its active neighborhood association, coordinating with the DMA and DBID, Dundee continues to be one of the most desirable districts to live, work and play, and designated by the American Association of Planners as one of the 10 Best Neighborhoods in the country.

We are reaching out for your support to maintain Dundee’s vibrancy and desirability as a district. The landscaping “nodes” along Underwood Ave. from 49 th to 51 st are a tremendous asset to the neighborhood and in need of an overhaul. As with any landscape, the nodes have experienced change, including the wonderful growth of the trees planted 10 years ago, providing shade where there was once much more sun. In addition, some of the original plantings were a bit too fragile for the environment, being trampled by pedestrians and stressed by salt from the ice melt applied to the road. And a few were a bit too happy in their nodes, filling them densely creating visual barriers for cars backing onto the street. We have diligently researched long-term solutions over the past year with local experts, including Kinghorn Gardens which has graciously created a new design using design principles different from the design implemented 10 years ago. These different principles provide a solution that is sustainable

long term, and, most importantly, is ecologically responsible, pollinator friendly, and a simply beautiful natural attraction.

The project design is inspired by the landscaping work of Piet Oudolf, the prominent Dutch landscape designer, who is credited with founding the “New Perennial Movement,” which champions gardens that use native grasses and other plants that grow back yearly. His designs are renowned for their creativity, color and feature an abundant range of native flora. Oudolf is the expert behind New York City’s High Line and Battery Park, Chicago’s Lurie Garden in Millennium Park, London’s Queen Elizabeth Park, and the entry to Toronto’s Botanical Garden. Our Dundee project would include signage for public education on the design principles.

The total cost of the design, installation and first year of maintenance is $125,000 (excluding the signage) with an anticipated installation date of Fall 2024. Fall installation is ideal, but to meet that schedule, the plants must be reserved in the spring of 2024, so our funding must be secured no later than March 2024. We would like to ask for your financial support and endorsement of this much needed and innovative initiative for Dundee. This project will require the generous support of Dundee’s neighbors and business and property owners such as yourself. One local foundation has generously committed to providing a 50% challenge grant, in the amount of $62,500. We are working to obtain the remaining $62,500 and do hope you will be a contributor to this

project.

Please consider making a gift to support Dundee and make our district continue to shine. Together, we can make it possible.
